The surest method to determine  if a diamond is real or not is to go to a professional for an evaluation. With new better fake diamonds available, it is more and more difficult to identify a real diamond even for a professional with a jewelers' loupes.

While that may be true, there are still things that have to be considered and followed. Always examine the stamp inside of the band which will tell you how many karats it is and this will increase your chances of making a legitimate deal.

If you have a powerful magnifying glass or a jeweler's loupe, examine the girdle-band and edges of the cut stone. If the edges are soft and rolled, it is an indication of a fake one. So does a clear, waxy-even strap where the facets get together and alter direction around the "belly" of the stone.

Keep glass away from your diamond to avoid scratching. Don't attempt acid tests that might be used on metals. Don't try smashing a diamond — it will crush as well as any other crystalline substance and better than many.  If it is a diamond, and you breath on it, the moisture will disappear too fast for you to see it; whereas, with a fake, it won't. It's only a hint and even that is not fail proof. In terms of true worth, and proving comparatively valueless, composition stones that have the base of one material and a table of diamond, will "pass" the test.

That will mean you have to choose your jewelers carefully, and then ask them for paperwork for each gem. Every stone is unique, and solid documentation can pay off when trying to figure out yours.. To get a correct and fair appraisal, a professional jeweler, can be a reliable and helpful source, as long as he has good sources for his information. 

Although chain jewelry stores are reputable firms, you may wish to consult a gemological laboratory when you desire an independent appraisal. These example businesses show the positive aspects of mass production and distribution as well as the negative aspects. They are often run very well, by honest men and women with equally honest support staff — but few in these stores are likely to have the in depth training associated with higher grades of jewelry store, or with highly qualified assessment businesses.

A licensed jeweler, a good journeyman in a traditional trade program, a former stone dealer — these are good indicators of skill.
